(AP) ? Kasey Kahne got the jump on Jeff Gordon off the final restart with two laps left and pulled away to win at Pocono Raceway.

Kahne had the car to beat for the final half of Sunday's 400-mile race until a late caution bunched up the field. Gordon, his Hendrick Motorsports teammate, took the lead and seemed poised to win his first race of the season. After the final caution, Kahne was strong enough this time off the restart in the No. 5 Chevrolet.

Kahne also won at Bristol this season. His win helped solidify his spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Gordon finished second on his 42nd birthday. Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman and Dale Earnhardt Jr. rounded out the top five.

The top five cars were Chevrolets.

Kahne, Gordon and Earnhardt made it a strong day for Hendrick. Teammate and series points leader Jimmie Johnson was 13th after a blown tire knocked him out of the lead.

Kahne had stretched his lead to almost 8 seconds when a caution for debris came out with 12 laps left. Gordon, still winless this season, was strong in the No. 24 and zipped to the lead as he looked to extend his record for career wins at Pocono.

Matt Kenseth spun with four laps left to erase Gordon's lead and set up the thrilling finish. Gordon led again until Kahne ran him down and blasted by his teammate for the win.

So close to the checkered, this loss stung Gordon.

"We had them. We certainly had the position," he said. "I'm pretty disappointed I let him get inside of me on (turn) one."

Kahne also won at Pocono in 2008. He entered ninth in the points standings and need a win to make sure he'd at least qualify for a wild-card spot should he fall below 10th place. Kahne was third last week at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and seems to be heating up with five races left until the Chase field is set.

Kahne's 16th career win should make him a Chase lock.

Gordon, who has six Pocono wins, finished second last week and has three straight top 10s to also position himself for a spot in the 12-driver field. He had won at Pocono each of the last two seasons. When Gordon leads late at Pocono, he usually wins. Just not this time.

"I've given away a lot more races than I've won," he said.

Johnson, who set a track record in qualifying, again had the dominant car for half the race until he blew a front tire. A week after a slow, final pit stop cost him a win at Indianapolis, Johnson was done in this time by a tire issue that ended his chance to win. Johnson did stretch his points lead to 77 over Clint Bowyer.

Baseball: Delbarton's Brian Rapp, Immaculata's Luke Bonfield transfer to Florida's IMG Academy

After dominating Morris County hitters for the past two seasons, Brian Rapp is ready to embark of his newest baseball challenge. And he'll be traveling more than 1,000 miles for it.

Rapp, this spring's Morris County Player of the Year, will not be returning to Delbarton for his senior season. Instead he is transferring to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

For Rapp, who will be joined at IMG Academy by Luke Bonfield of Immaculata, the decision was one of the most difficult he's ever had to make.

"It was extremely difficult. Me and my parents took a while to think about it and we had to weigh all of the different options," said Rapp, a Boston College commit. "Obviously there's positives and negatives to everything, but we just felt at this point it was best for me with my career and where I want to go and where I aspire to go.

"It's going to be a culture shock, it's going to be a change, but it's something I've come to the realization that I think it's what's best for me and where I want to go in life. Anything I can do to see myself grow as a person and as an athlete."

Rapp and Bonfield will heading down to Florida later this month to attend Academy, which doubles as both a prep school as well as a world-class athletic training facility.

A three-year varsity player at Delbarton, Rapp emerged as one of the state's premier starting pitchers. After beginning the season in the bullpen, Rapp moved into the rotation midway through the year and won all four of his starts. Rapp, a Second Team All-State selection, went 7-0 with a 0.45 ERA and two saves. He struck out 69 batters in 47 innings, allowing 29 hits and 12 walks.

As a sophomore in 2012, his work in relief and at shortstop made him a key cog for a Delbarton squad which won the Morris County Tournament and reached the NJSIAA North Jersey, Non-Public A title game.

"Delbarton is the greatest school I could have ever asked to go to the last three years. It's just an unbelievable place, unbelievable people," Rapp said. "That was probably the hardest thing, leaving Coach (Bruce) Shatel and not being able to play for him one more year. I learned so much under him. I got pretty emotional when I talked to him about it. I've learned so much and I feel like I've grown up and matured so much over the last three years under his tutelage."

Bonfield, was an All-Somerset County First Team selection in 2013 as a junior. He hit .375 with five home runs, 36 RBI and a 1.098 OPS for Immaculata.

A 1944 Electromagnetic Radiation Poster Makes Learning Retro Chic

There are lots of interactions and fields around us all the time that we can't see. Like gravity. We can always count on gravity to be there when we trip and face plant. And we interact with all different frequencies on the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation every day, which is usually fine and sometimes deadly. And you might be feeling good about all this physical awareness, but don't. People have known about this stuff for a long time and they've been making unbelievably detailed infographics about it for at least 70 years.

Apple Loop: Cook Goes to China - Again, E-Book Drama, Google Moto X Is No iPhone

Keeping you in the loop on a few of the things that happened around Apple this week.

Another China Mobile meet and greet. It?s no coincidence that Apple CEO Tim Cook showed up in China (his third visit in two years) a week after the company reported weak sales there. China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua met with Cook in Beijing July 30 to discuss ?cooperation? between the two companies, the Chinese telecom company confirmed this week. China Mobile is the world?s largest telecom company by subscribers (more than 740 million) and the only carrier there not to offer Apple?s iPhone and iPad. Apple signed up China Unicom and China Telecom as partners in the past two years. But Apple watchers see a deal with China Mobile as the big win. China is already the largest market for smartphones and demand there is supposed to explode in the next few years. The deal may be so long in coming because the iPhone will need to be modified to run on the special version of 3G technology that China Mobile uses. By the way, Cook also met with top executives from China Unicom and China Telecom while in Beijing. FYI, Apple?s sales in China in the quarter ended in June were down 43 percent from the prior quarter and Cook said it was due to weak demand in Hong Kong but he?s not sure why. But it?s likely that customers may be waiting to see what Apple conjures up with its new iPhone this fall.

Apple has had its shares of PR troubles in China, beyond the ongoing scrutiny of the labor practices of its suppliers there. It recently apologized to Chinese consumers for its warranty policies and last week put up a notice on its Chinese website cautioning users against using non-Apple iPhone chargers after a Chinese flight attendant was electrocuted using a faulty third-party charger. And this week the New York-based nonprofit China Labor Watch released a report (found here) alleging labor abuses ? including withholding of worker pay? at Pegatron, an Apple contractor in Taiwan. Apple said that while it has been aware of some of the problems found by China Labor Watch and working with Pegatron, it will be investigating others that it was made aware of by the watchdog group.

Paying up for e-books.?The Department of Justice, which last month won its antitrust case against Apple over e-book price fixing, announced its?proposed remedies?today. The DOJ is asking that Apple terminate its existing e-book agreements with the five publishers it was accused of conspiring with. It also asks that the company ?refrain for five years from entering new e-book distribution contracts which would restrain Apple from competing on price. Under the department?s proposed remedy, ?Apple will be prohibited from again serving as a conduit of information among the conspiring publishers or from retaliating against publishers for refusing to sell e-books on agency terms.? A few hours later, Apple filed a brief opposing the DOJ?s proposed remedy, which it called a ?draconian and punitive intrusion into Apple?s business, wildly out of proportion to any adjudicated wrongdoing or potential wrong.? Thanks to?The Next Web?for posting Apple?s 31-page brief. You can also find it on?Scribd.?

Moto X is nice but? Google finally unveiled the new Moto X smartphone ? the first model designed since its completed its $12.5 billion takeover of Motorola in June 2012 ? and the reviews for the Android-based device are mostly positive. But Apple watchers are breathing a sigh of relief because while it?s nice ? always-on voice control, some cool customization options ? they don?t consider it a material threat to iPhone sales, at least not right now. Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray says it will definitely stand out against other Android-based phones, but doesn?t see it ?significantly different? enough to change the ?current market dynamics between Android and iPhone.? Stuart Jeffrey of Nomura Research also thinks Moto X will lure customers away from Samsung and HTC devices, but won?t trigger ?churn from iPhone users.? You can find a hands-on review by Forbes? Alex Konrad here.

iPhone versus Samsung. Two smartphones from Samsung beat out the iPhone to seize the top spot in a survey of individual smartphones by the Amerian Customer Satisfaction Index. Samsung?s Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note II each scored 84 on a scale of 100 in a smartphone brand study. They beat out a trio of Apple?s phones?the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S, which each got an 82, and the iPhone 4, which received an 81. Consumers gave the Samsung phones the edge for for two reasons, ACSI Director David VanAmburg said in an interview with Forbes? contributor Rob Hof. One was the larger screen size, which those surveyed found appealing. The other was price, or more accurately perceived value. One note: Apple?s phones overall had a higher customer satisfaction rating than Samsung, whose ratings incorporate feedback on the feature phones it sells. Apple doesn?t sell feature phones.

Pass the chips. Apple has bought low-power wireless chip developer Passif Semiconductor. The company?s technology has a radio that ?works with a low-energy version of Bluetooth called Bluetooth LE, which is promising for health-monitoring and fitness devices that need extra-long battery life,? says former WSJ reporter Jessica Lessin, who first reported the news. It was confirmed by Apple to AllThingsD, though the company declined to discuss terms of the deal. What kind of devices might want such a low-power chip? Wearable computing devices like the smartwatch Apple is reportedly working on.

iPad mini refresh. Ever since Apple introduced the iPad mini last year, the talk has been about when Apple will release a version of it with the Retina display technology used in the iPhone and the larger-format iPad. The prognosticators have been saying we?ll see it later this year ? in time for the all-important holiday shopping season, and they may be right. Suppliers of the device are gearing up for mass production of the Retina-based iPad mini, which will have a 7.9-inch screen just like the current model, in the fourth quarter, the Wall Street Journal says, citing people familiar with the matter. The interesting twist? Apple may be relying on tablet and smartphone rival Samsung ? or its Samsung Display Co. unit ? to supply the screens it needs, along with Sharp Corp. But the WSJ notes that Apple?s designs and plans routinely change right up until new products are released so all this may not be a done deal. But an iPad mini with a Retina display makes a lot of sense, especially since others already have high-resolution screens, including Google with it s Nexus 7 tablet and Amazon with its 7-inch Kindle Fire.

Retail woes. Two former Apple retail workers filed a class action suit against the company, saying they and other hourly retail workers were required to wait for as much as 30 minutes each week without pay as their bags were checked. Over the course of year, the off-the-clock bag checks cost Apple?s hourly workers about $1,500 in ?uncompensated hours worked and overtime,? according to a lawsuit filed in San Francisco by Amanda Frlekin, who worked in a Los Angeles Apple retail store for about three years, and Dean Pelle, who served as an Apple specialist at stores in Atlanta, New York and West Palm Beach, Florida for about six years? In other retail news, Apple?s search for a new retail chief ? Tim Cook fired retail head John Browett after less than a year on the job in October ? continues, but the company hasn?t yet found a list of worthy candidates, according to the WSJ, which says recruiters Egon Zehnder International are handling the search. Cook has been leading the retail stores as the search goes on. How?s that working out? Third-quarter retail sales were flat year-over-year and down 22 percent from the second quarter.?

Fingerprints and the iPhone 5S. Will Apple include a fingerprint scanner in the new iPhone coming this fall? Maybe. At the start of this week, developer Hamza Sood posted an image on twitter saying that code in the new iOS 7 operating system for the iPhone appears to confirm rumors that the iPhone home button will contain a fingerprint sensor. Those rumors grew out of Apple?s acquisition last year of security firm AuthenTec, which has fingerprint technology. But today, Techkiddy posted photos it claims show internal parts of the upcoming iPhone 5S and there?s no fingerprint scanner to be found. So will they or won?t they? I?m sure that the iPhone will include a fingerprint scanner at some point in the near future, but I wouldn?t be surprised if they waited for next year?s iPhone 6.

Special projects. When an executive?s job changes and his new role involves working on ?special projects? for the?CEO,?that?s usually a sign he?s already out the door. But Apple SVP Bob Mansfield may actually be working on new projects. Let?s rewind here a bit to last weekend when Mansfield?s bio suddenly disappeared from the ?leadership? page on Apple?s website showing Tim Cook and his executive team. Mansfield, a longtime hardware engineering leader at the company, was tapped last year to run a new Technologies group that included the teams working on wireless technologies and chips. This week,?Apple said?he is now working on ?special projects? and will continue to report to Tim Cook. Company insiders say Mansfield will really be working on special projects, including some of the new products under development that Cook has promised to deliver in late 2013 and 2014.

Jobs the film gets big marketing push. Jobs, the Steve Jobs? biopic to be released Aug. 16, released a behind-the-scenes making of video with some new scenes from the flick. You can check it out above, or watch all the trailers you may have missed at JobsTheFilm.com. I have to say, Ashton Kutcher as a young Steve Jobs looks the part. But when it comes to good movies, we all know that looks aren?t everything.

That?s it for this week. Enjoy the weekend.

CSU Rams coach Jim McElwain pleased by team's new direction, slogan

FORT COLLINS ? Speaking Thursday during a pre-camp chat with reporters, Colorado State football coach Jim McElwain acknowledged that "it's yet to be determined" whether his team will take a major step after having worked under the new staff for a year.

But McElwain said he likes the vibe. That includes players coming up with a slogan for this season:

"One town. One team. One dream."

"I am really excited at what they chose, independently, as a team affirmation," McElwain said. "I think they are understanding that each one of us is responsible for this town. They are responsible for this team. And each one of us has to carry that dream.

"That really hit me that we're headed in the right direction."

Colorado State returns 17 starters off its 4-8 team of a year ago. But even with that experience, McElwain expects more competition at every position during this August camp, which starts Tuesday.

McElwain said players worked extra hard during offseason conditioning and in team building.

"I feel a whole lot better this year with the strides our guys have made," McElwain said. "The light really came on."

As for the slogan or motto, senior cornerback Shaq Bell said the players were in a meeting room kicking around ideas. Senior defensive end Shaq Barrett came up with "One town. One team. One dream," Bell said. McElwain and players said they will not divulge the dream or team goal at this time.

"We wanted one slogan that fit the team," Bell said. "Everyone liked it. The 'One town' was for the whole community to get into it and that we're playing for the community and not just for ourselves. The 'One team' is that all the players and all the coaches, we're all bought in.

"The 'One Dream' part ? we're not going to bring that out yet."

Senior long snapper Tanner Hedstrom said the "one town" part of the slogan is special to him, being a native of Fort Collins.

"We've got a lot of true fans," Hedstrom said, "but I remember when (this program) was going to all those bowl games and winning (conference) championships, and the stadium was packed and people were sitting (in overflow) on the grass. That's what we're trying to get back to."

Then there are DIY plans for building an art easel and sensory table that can also be used for sand and water.? Hmm these just might find their way onto the honey do list!

What I really loved about this book is their learning philosophy is very similar to mine.? I believe that the best learning for most young children is play based.? That they will learn and retain more by trying and doing and having FUN!? Most of the activity materials are things you will already have on hand.? Things like measuring cups, baking supplies (not just baking but gooey chemistry fun!) blocks, craft supplies and different things to use for math counters etc.? Many of these activities brought our whole family together not just me and the youngest little fella.? They ALL enjoy playing dress up, acting out stories, making play dough, going exploring in nature.

2013-07-24

I would highly recommend The Homegrown Preschooler to any family looking for? play based learning for their children.? This book is beautifully laid out and just packed full of? helpful ideas.? When our little?s are grown up this will be a book I?ll be saving to use with our grandchildren!

You can view a preview on Gryphon House website and it is available for purchase from them for $29.95.

House Republicans leery of 'Obamacare' defunding idea

By Richard Cowan and Caren Bohan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Tea Party-inspired plan to kill President Barack Obama's healthcare law by forcing a government shutdown unless funds to implement the law are denied has not gained traction among senior Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, lawmakers said on Wednesday.

"I think leadership is giving other options that they think are more effective," said Republican Representative Pat Tiberi, a close ally of House Speaker John Boehner.

Tiberi, speaking to Reuters following a closed-door meeting of House Republicans, said that while a final decision probably had not been made, his colleagues are more likely to continue pushing for Congress to repeal individual provisions of "Obamacare."

Republicans have been on a continuous campaign to kill Obama's landmark healthcare law, which aims to help provide medical insurance for millions of people who cannot afford it on their own. They argue that the law, which is taking effect in stages, will discourage job creation and saddle businesses with higher costs.

Tea Party-backed conservatives in the Senate, including Senators Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee, have been trying to persuade enough of their fellow Republicans to join them in a high-stakes gamble that would threaten a government shutdown on the start of the new fiscal year, October 1, unless legislation to keep Washington operating specifically defunds Obamacare.

More senior Senate Republicans have savaged the idea, with some calling it "dumb," "silly," "feckless" and "dishonest."

On September 30, federal funding expires for hundreds of federal programs, ranging from military activities and NASA space exploration to federal parks, education and job training.

A dozen funding bills for the fiscal year starting on October 1 are pending in Congress but are unlikely to be completed by that deadline.

The result is that Congress will either have to pass a temporary funding bill, called a continuing resolution or CR, or risk government closings. Tea Party-backed senators who want to attach the Obamacare provision have complicated already difficult negotiations over government spending levels.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers, asked about chances of his chamber going along with demands of Tea Party-backed senators on the funding bill, told reporters: "This is just something the White House will not accept and we've got to have a CR."

Representative Tom Cole, another longtime House Republican, told reporters that he had seen "an awful lot of push-back" on the idea, adding, "I don't sense that there's nearly enough unanimity in either the Senate or the House Republican conferences to push an approach like that."

With Congress about to start a month-long break, Boehner said he will keep mulling ways to tackle end-of-fiscal-year funding problems.

"I'm confident that when we get into the fall, it may be a messy process, but I suspect we'll find a way to deal with it," Boehner told reporters.

Apple's next iPad mini will have a Retina display! No it won't!

Screen Shot 2013-08-01 at 4.26.03 AMFORTUNE --?A tech blogger could fill his or her days chasing the latest rumors about upcoming Apple (AAPL)?products -- and as the more than two dozen links in the screen grab at right attest, many do.

But Thursday morning's dueling headlines on top of Techmeme -- one from Lorraine Luk at the Wall Street Journal and the other from 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman -- remind me why I don't bother with this stuff anymore, and why maybe you needn't either.

Working the Asian supply chain rumor mill, Luk reports that the next iPad mini will feature a high-res Retina display. Interpreting files hidden deep within the latest version of the IOS 7 software developers kit, Gurman reaches the opposite conclusion.

Both offer their findings as honest-to-goodness scoops. But because Apple is not talking to them -- and never will -- neither really knows what's in the works. And toward the end of their stories, each offers a version of the same caveat:

  • Luk: "Apple routinely tests various designs and has been known to make changes late in the design process so it is unclear whether the product will make its way to market."
  • Gurman: "While it appears, based on these references, that Apple is considering and testing a new iPad mini with a spec-bump and no Retina display, we?cannot confirm that Apple will actually ship this device as a product." (emphasis his)

So remind me, why do we care?

Organised and serious crime | HSC Legal Studies: News Watch

A new report Organised crime in Australia 2013 has been produced by the Australian Crime Commission and?released by the Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice, Jason Clare. In his media release, the Minister?sums up the report's conclusion as being that organised crime is 'more powerful, more pervasive and?more complex than ever before'. The full report is available from the Crime Commission's website.

The report was released at a conference on International Serious and Organised Crime, held in Brisbane on 30 July 2013. The keynote speech given at?the conference by the CEO of the Crime Commission is also interesting. The Crime Commission was formed 10 years ago and the CEO reflects on the differences between 10 years ago and now:

'Ten years ago we followed criminals? money to confiscate their assets. Today, we follow the money trail to discover new crime threats, pinpoint high-risk criminals, target money laundering, and identify ways to make it harder for serious and organised crime to operate in Australia.

Ten years ago, law enforcement worked in relative isolation. Today, law enforcement is focussed on working in partnerships, both nationally and internationally.

And ten years ago, Australia was unable to identify the highest threat risks to the nation?s interests. Today, the National Targeting System categorises and lists the most serious organised crime threats to Australia.'

He also identifies new areas of serious crime, the international jurisdictions that have the most effect on crime Australia and some of the less obvious effects of organised crime on society. He also? examines the effectiveness of approaches taken by the Crime Commission in tackling serious and organised crime, stressing the importance of prevention.
