There is still need for more resources at the University of Guyana and President Donald Ramotar has called on the University Official to assist in this regard.
Speaking at the 46th Convocation Ceremony the President urged that UG itself look towards the creation of stronger resource base, through private grants and programmes by way of exploration of private financing and scholarships.
?It is my hope that the university itself will explore ways and means of raising funds, ways in which ways in which it can do this is through the provision of knowledge based services, consultancies, accessing research grants and through relationships and engagements with other Universities? the President added.
The President said the possibility of more private financing needs to be explored adding that there is need to improve the provision of scholarship for students.
?Scholarships are one way in which we encourage students to perform better, I would like to see our local private sector who benefits in those small measures from output to provide more scholarships to this institution? the President also added.
The President pointed to Government?s 2012 Budgetary allocation of 900 million dollars to the institution along with the student loan programme funding of 450 million.
The sum of 2 billion is to be injected into the science and technology programme over the next few years.
Government has also received from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) $250,000 us for the modernisation of the institution?s regulatory framework consistent with contemporary Universities.
